Fastweb launches 5G trial

19 Nov 2019

The Italian telco Fastweb has launched live 5G trials in the city of Genoa along with equipment partner Ericsson. The operator says the 5G infrastructure has enabled it to ‘implement innovative video surveillance projects, virtual reality solutions to enhance cultural heritage, an environmental monitoring system to control air quality, and manage lighting systems’. The trials are centred on the city’s Old Port area.

Fastweb won licences in the 26GHz band in the Italian government’s 5G spectrum auction in October 2018 and also holds 3.5GHz frequencies thanks to its acquisition last year of the TD-LTE fixed-wireless business of Tiscali.
