Zain Bahrain to launch 5G service by end of year

11 Nov 2019

Zain Bahrain, the country’s second largest mobile network operator (MNO) by subscribers, has announced it will launch a 5G service by the end of the year, having selected Ericsson to deploy a radio network that will enable it to offer enhanced mobile broadband and fixed wireless access. Under the terms of the cellco’s strategic agreement with Ericsson, which involves network modernisation from LTE to 5G, Ericsson will provide Zain Bahrain with 3GPP standards-based 5G New Radio (NR) hardware and software from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio, including Massive MIMO solutions as well as the Ericsson Packet Core. The two companies claim the new network will deliver very high data speed, extreme low latency, ultra-high reliability, energy efficiency and extreme device densities, which will be realised by the development of LTE in combination with Ericsson’s new radio-access technologies.

Speaking at the contract signing, Zain Bahrain chairman Ahmed bin Ali Al Khalifa commented: ‘Zain Bahrain’s ability to provide the latest 5G revolution services is part of a continued commitment to investing in our digitalisation strategy to empower customers with solutions and services that are at the forefront of our digital future.’
