SoftBank Corp Q2 net income down, but revenues edge up

SoftBank Corp, a subsidiary of Japanese holding company SoftBank Group Corp, has reported that net income attributable to shareholders fell to JPY162.627 billion (USD1.5 billion) in its fiscal second-quarter ending 30 September 2019, down from JPY164.797 billion year-on-year, although operating profit increased 9% to JPY283.106 billion, EBITDA improved by 0.8% to JPY437.645 billion, and revenue inched up to JPY1.209 trillion from JPY1.165 trillion. SoftBank’s operating income beat an average forecast of JPY266 billion from four analyst estimates compiled by Refinitiv, buoyed by a strong performance from its mobile business. Capital expenditure for the period under review was JPY116.814 billion, compared to JPY105.927 billion in the corresponding period a year earlier.

Japan’s third largest telco by subscribers and revenue said its Consumer segment generated revenue of JPY677.978 billion in July-September 2019, up 3.0% y-o-y, of which JPY424.855 billion was generated from Mobile and JPY95.441 billion from Broadband; revenues from ‘sale of goods and others’ accounted for the remainder (JPY157.682 billion). Meanwhile, SoftBank Corp’s Enterprise segment contributed revenue of JPY159.646 billion (up 3.3%), broken down as Mobile (JPY70.288 billion), Fixed Line (JPY48.492 billion) and Business solutions/other (JPY40.866 billion). Further, the carrier’s Distribution segment added revenue of JPY128.700 billion in the second quarter (up 10.6%) and the Yahoo segment a further JPY245.510 billion (up 2.9%).

Operationally, SoftBank Corp closed out September with a total of 35.559 million ‘Main subscribers’ (up a net 1.605 million y-o-y), including 23.034 million ‘Smartphones’ (up 1.940 million), 7.325 million ‘Communication modules and others’ (up 173,000) and 1.906 million ‘PHS’ subscriptions (down 335,000). In the fixed line arena, the telco reported a total of 7.757 million fixed broadband connections at end-September 2019, up from 7.385 million y-o-y, of which 6.164 million are ‘SoftBank Hikari’, 836,000 are ‘Yahoo! BB Hikari with FLET’s’ and 757,000 are ‘Yahoo! BB ADSL’.
