Australia’s Optus announced today (4 November 2019) the commercial launch of 5G mobile and 5G residential fixed broadband services over its network covering selected areas. 290 5G network sites are currently live in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and other locations in New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, and 1,200 sites are planned by March 2020. 5G mobile phones available to Optus customers include the Samsung Note 10+ 5G, Samsung S10 5G and Oppo Reno 5G, with more models upcoming, while 5G Home packages offer unlimited data and no speed caps – Optus currently claims a peak speed of 400Mbps with a guarantee of 50Mbps-or-higher. The 5G Home footprint initially covers 138,000 homes, with 200 trial customers having tested the service. Optus also announced that it will be providing 5G Streaming 4K Ultra HD Video next year, including 4K Ultra HD live football via its Optus Sport service from June.
