Grupo ICE to test 5G in November

30 Oct 2019

State-owned utility firm Grupo Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (Grupo ICE), which offers a full portfolio of telecoms services under the Kolbi brand, has disclosed plans to test 5G mobile services next month, using its existing frequencies. To facilitate the trials – which will commence at the Moin container terminal in Limon – the group has enlisted tech vendors Huawei, Nokia and Telrad.

The plans were revealed by Suzeth Rodriguez, chief technology officer at state-owned sister company Radiografica Costarricense (RACSA). RACSA itself is known to hold 5G-suitable spectrum in the 3425MHz-3625MHz band, while ICE is in possession of frequencies in a wide number of bands, including 800MHz, 1700MHz, 1900MHz, 2.5GHz and 3.4GHz.
