Nos has confirmed that Matosinhos, part of the northern Porto district of Portugal, has become the first Portuguese city to achieve 100% 5G coverage. While 5G licensing has yet to take place in Portugal, the National Communications Authority (Autoridade Nacional de Comunicacoes, ANACOM) has allowed the telco to utilise a block of 3.5GHz spectrum. CEO Miguel Almeida told local media outlets that the network was deployed by Huawei and comprises around 20 base transceiver stations (BTS).
TeleGeography notes that Nos trialled 5G technology in Matosinhos back in June this year, when the city hosted the country’s inaugural Free Technology Zone (FTZ) project. The 5G testing process involved the demonstration of beach surveillance/danger prevention techniques. Nos went on to launch its first 5G-capable smartphone – the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G – on 1 August.
