Telia Finland has announced the launch of a 5G network section covering the Tripla Mall in Helsinki (‘the largest shopping centre in Scandinavia’) using Nokia’s base stations and small cell technology, functioning in the 3.5GHz frequency range. Telia’s new 5G subscription packages and devices will be showcased at a new flagship store in the mall, while the company is also in the process of relocating its headquarters to the site.
This month Telia is offering early-adopter customers its first 5G phones and routers – the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G and Huawei 5G CPE Pro – with the Nokia 5G FastMile router expected to be available by the end of this month and the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G smartphone ‘coming soon’. Telia is offering consumers and B2B subscribers who buy a 5G phone ‘Unlimited’ packages with either 1Gbps or 450Mbps maximum data speeds within 5G pilot zones, while a 1Gbps ‘Connect by Interface’ mobile broadband device package will also be available.
Under its 3.5GHz licence valid from January 2019, Telia currently operates pilot 5G network sections in selected locations in Helsinki, Vantaa and Oulu. Janne Koistinen, 5G programme director at Telia Finland, declared: ‘We are accelerating network construction now that the first 5G devices are on sale. By the end of the year, our network [will expand] to the seven largest cities in Finland, and by the beginning of next year, the network will expand further.’
