Tigo rebranded as Free in Senegal, launches LTE-A plans

2 Oct 2019

Tigo, Senegal’s second largest mobile network operator (MNO) by subscribers, has been rebranded as Free Senegal with effect from 1 October 2019, following the company’s acquisition by the Saga Africa Holdings consortium in April 2018. A website featuring the Free brand identity is now live and promoting the operator’s new ‘4G+’ LTE-A network, which is said to cover Dakar and most regional capitals and offer the country’s fastest mobile data speeds.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Tigo Senegal paid a total of XOF27 billion (USD44.9 million) for its 4G concession in December 2018. Tigo Senegal was sold by Millicom International Cellular (MIC) in April 2018 to the Saga Africa Holdings Limited, a consortium owned by Xavier Niel-led NJJ, Teyliom Group and Sofima (Axian Group).
