Vodafone begins testing at first South Island 5G site

27 Sep 2019

Ahead of its planned launch of 5G services in December, Vodafone New Zealand has confirmed testing is now underway at its first 5G-enabled site on South Island. The base transceiver station (BTS) at Addington Racecourse in Christchurch has been upgraded using Nokia technology, including 5G-enabled antennas, as part of a wider plan to install 5G technology at 100 existing sites around the country by December and upgrade an additional 400 sites to 4.5G.

Sharina Nisha, Vodafone NZ’s Head of Platforms, commented: ‘Our team of engineers will be undertaking extensive testing to ensure we’re providing optimum connectivity for customers when the 5G network is first switched on in December. As part of the network testing, we are checking connectivity and responsiveness – and we’re confident Kiwis will be impressed by the faster speeds and lower latency that 5G offers.’
