FCCC cuts FINTEL cable charges to help drive competition

18 Sep 2019

Fiji Village reports that the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) has reviewed and reduced access charges for the Fiji International Telecommunications (FINTEL) cable landing station to the Southern Cross Cable Network (SCCN), as part of ongoing efforts to improve internet affordability for all. In a statement, FCCC’s Joel Abraham said that effective 1 October 2019, a 10GB line which previously cost FJD40,000 (USD18,490) will now cost just FJD640, adding that he hopes the reduction will ‘eventually’ be passed on to consumers. The SCCN is the primary optical fibre submarine cable connecting Fiji’s international telecommunications systems with the globe and providing the bulk of Fiji’s internet and data access. Commenting, Abraham noted that the price cut is driven by the fact that the cost of the service is no longer driven by the capacity of connections, but rather by FINTEL’s capital and operational expenditures.
