Shenzhen offers subsidy for 5G rollout

The government of Shenzhen city – a global tech hub that has earned itself the label of ‘China’s Silicon Valley’ – has offered to subsidise mobile network operators (MNOs) for 5G network construction within the city and will provide infrastructure firm China Tower with free access to utility infrastructure, ducts and certain public spaces for 5G deployment, Mobile World Live reports. The administration is offering cellcos CNY10,000 (USD1,412) per base station for up to 15,000 base stations per operator, but the news outlet notes that the figure is unlikely to have a substantial impact on rollout plans, with each base station reportedly costing between CNY200,000 and CNY300,000. Shenzhen is aiming to have 45,000 5G base stations installed by August next year.
