Telekom Romania has launched a new fixed-wireless broadband access service for customers unable to connect to a fibre-optic network. The new product, marketed under the name ‘Smart WiFi’, uses the operator’s 4G network to provide unlimited internet access at speeds of up to 150Mbps and support for up to 64 simultaneous Wi-Fi connections. The company notes the service, which costs RON24 (USD5.59) a month and simply requires a SIM card and a power source, responds to customer demand for a solution that provides high speed internet access without the need for cable installation. ‘In order to understand what Romanians want and to be able to answer their needs correctly, we have tested Smart WiFi among consumers across the country. We learned, once again, that Romanians want fast and unlimited internet access, efficiency and simplicity,’ Andreas Elsner, Chief Commercial Officer of the Residential Segment at Telekom Romania is quoted as saying by Romania-insider.com.
Telekom Romania’s 4G network covers 89% of the country’s population and 99% of the urban population. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, the operator is currently Romania’s second largest broadband provider with a market share of 20.9%.
