FCC considering extra funding for Puerto Rico, USVI

6 Sep 2019

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) chairman Ajit Pai has circulated a draft order to his fellow commissioners that would provide approximately USD950 million in funding to bolster and expand high speed internet networks in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Broadband connectivity on the Caribbean islands has come under scrutiny since the two US territories were devastated by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.

The FCC notes that this cash injection represents the second round of funding under the FCC’s ‘Uniendo a Puerto Rico Fund’ and ‘Connect USVI Fund’. The draft order will be considered at the FCC’s next monthly meeting, which will take place on 26 September.
