Telekom Deutschland, the domestic fixed and mobile operating unit of Deutsche Telekom (DT), has announced the launch of its 5G network in five cities across Germany. Services are currently available in Berlin, Bonn, Darmstadt, Cologne and Munich, where 129 5G antennas are transmitting. Telekom claims that speeds of up to 1Gbps can be achieved. A further two cities – Hamburg and Leipzig – will gain coverage by the end of 2019, increasing the number of antennas to 300, and by the end of 2020 at least 20 of the largest cities will be connected to the 5G network.
Consumers require a 5G-enabled handset, such as the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G, the Huawei Mate 20 X 5G and the HTC 5G HUB, and a relevant ‘MagentaMobil’ tariff. ‘We are bringing 5G to city streets in line with our customers’ needs,’ stated Walter Goldenits, CTO at Telekom Deutschland, adding: ‘We’re starting off where data usage is high and are establishing continuous coverage areas in these places.’
