Japan’s NTT DOCOMO has selected Gilat Satellite Networks to supply it with LTE satellite backhaul, as part of plans to expand its 4G footprint in rural areas, a press release revealed. The Japanese cellco is looking to ensure ‘secure and robust coverage even in the most challenging weather conditions’, and to that end will use Gilat’s satellite backhaul supported by SKY Perfect’s JCSAT-4B orbiter to deliver DOCOMO’s service in ‘selected areas’ of Japan.

Takumi Togi, senior manager of DOCOMO’s Radio Access Network Engineering Department, commented: ‘NTT DOCOMO sees great value in satellite backhauling to extend its leading broadband fibre network to islands, destinations, and areas where terrestrial coverage is not available … We are pleased to be partnering with Gilat, the recognised satellite backhauling leader in Japan as well as worldwide, for materialising our cellular network vision.’
