Russian mobile operator MTS has launched its 5G pilot network zone in Moscow, in partnership with Huawei, RT reported. The pilot network is located at the VDNKh Exhibition Centre, utilising the 28GHz and 4.9GHz frequency bands, with tests to include Smart City applications for security, urban services management and transport systems. MTS and Huawei have also switched on a pilot 5G network in the town of Kronshtadt near St Petersburg.
Rival operator MegaFon has partnered Nokia and Qualcomm to test 5G-capable infrastructure at its R&D centre in St Petersburg, using Massive MIMO antennas enabling data speeds of over 5Gbps. Megafon plans to use the equipment for its upcoming Moscow 5G pilot deployment. Furthermore, MegaFon has demonstrated a 5G base station at a site in Moscow, which it utilised to host a cybersport tournament with 5G and cloud technologies.
