Vodafone New Zealand has announced that five cell sites in Mangere, South Auckland have now been upgraded to 5G and made live for network testing ahead of the commercial launch of its 5G network in December 2019, by which date it plans to deploy the technology in at least a hundred existing sites in high-density urban areas. As part of the work 400 existing 4G sites will also be upgraded to LTE-A.
‘We want as many Kiwis as possible to access our 5G network when we switch it on, so we’re focusing our initial rollout on high-density urban areas in town centres,’ says Tony Baird, Vodafone NZ’s technology director. ‘As part of the 5G testing, we are checking network connectivity and speeds – and we’re confident Kiwis will be impressed by the faster speeds and lower latency that 5G offers.’
The Vodafone NZ 5G rollout has been enabled by the company’s existing spectrum holdings in the 3.5GHz frequency band.
