Hutchison Drei Austria has announced that it has switched on its 5G infrastructure in Worgl, in the state of Tyrol. Worgl is the first location in Western Austria to receive 5G access, and the third in the country as a whole – following launches in Linz (20 June) and Portschach (13 August). In the coming months, Drei says that it will further expand its 5G network, and as soon as enough locations are connected it will launch the service on a commercial basis. Until then, interested customers, businesses and institutions are welcome to sign up to a 5G pilot. CEO Jan Trionow commented: ‘While the other providers have been intensively promoting their 5G plans for almost half a year, we prefer to act.’
TeleGeography notes that Drei acquired 5G-suitable spectrum holdings in March 2019, paying EUR51.9 million (USD57.6 million) for 3.4GHz-3.8GHz frequencies covering all twelve designated regions of Austria.
