Venezuela’s Digitel taps Ericsson for 4G overhaul

7 Aug 2019

Venezuelan mobile operator Digitel has revealed that it has hired Ericsson to deploy 200 4G base transceiver stations (BTS), as it seeks to improve coverage and capacity. The value of the contract is around USD25 million, and the contract will involve the replacement of legacy Huawei infrastructure. The first location to receive improved services will be the capital Caracas, with the state of Zulia also prioritised due to its saturated networks.

TeleGeography notes that Digitel achieved Venezuela’s first commercial LTE launch back in July 2013, and its 1800MHz 4G network is now understood to span more than 135 towns and cities.
