Mytel, the most recent entrant to Myanmar’s mobile market, has successfully tested 5G technology, claiming to be the first company to showcase the new platform in Myanmar. The demonstration utilised 5G New Radio (NR) equipment supplied by Chinese vendor Huawei, and achieved download speeds of 1.6Gbps, the Irrawaddy reports. Speaking at a press conference to mark the trial, Mytel CEO U Zaw Min Oo said that the operator is aiming to launch commercial 5G services next year, providing the government auctions 5G spectrum in 2020. The official raised doubts about the potential availability and affordability of compatible devices, though, noting that: ‘There are about ten manufacturers of 5G handsets so far and they are quite expensive’. On a more positive note, meanwhile, the cellco said in a press release that 5G services would be priced at the same level as 4G services.
