American Samoa unveils Territorial Broadband Strategy

30 Jul 2019

Buoyed by the arrival of the Hawaiki submarine cable in July 2018, American Samoa – an unincorporated and unorganised territory of the US – has unveiled a new initiative known as the Territorial Broadband Strategy (TBS), as the island chain seeks to diversify the local economic base. The project is being spearheaded by the Department of Commerce (DoC), which has taken receipt of a USD100,000 grant from the US Economic Development Administration to bankroll the project.

According to the DoC’s 2Q19 performance report, as quoted by Samoa News: ‘TBS will guide local efforts to leverage broadband resources, install processes to maintain infrastructure, plan for future expansion or upgrades as needed, and address other policy needs.’
