Africell eyeing Angola mobile licence

29 Jul 2019

Africell CEO Ziad Dalloul has said that the group will bid for the fourth mobile licence in Angola, claiming that Africell has access to USD300 million funding to enter a new market alongside its existing operations in Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gambia and Sierra Leone. Quoted by Zimbabwe’s Business Day, Dalloul added that Africell is ‘looking only at markets where we can make a difference’ including Angola and Zimbabwe. The CEO also claimed that if licensed in Angola, Africell could swiftly bring down prices, expand rural coverage and provide ‘faster, better’ internet services. Angola is due to launch a new tender for a fourth unified fixed/mobile licensee – to join Unitel, Movicel and Angola Telecom – after the original tender was annulled by the President’s Office in April.
