Telekom Romania CEO Miroslav Majoros has told local media outlet Ziarul Financiar that the Romanian government should postpone the 5G auction by a few months to allow telcos more time to prepare and secure the necessary financing. The executive argued the Romania authorities have set a very aggressive schedule between publication of the tender dossier and the actual auction, which is planned for the autumn. ‘Our financial situation is better than it was a year ago, but we do not expect to be able to fund our bid without obtaining financing,’ he claimed, adding: ‘The timeframe would be very, very tight. I’m not saying it would be impossible, but it would be very difficult.’
Romania’s National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications (ANCOM) announced in June that it expects to complete the tendering procedure for the available spectrum by 31 October and award 5G licences in December, enabling the winning operators to use part of the spectrum from 1 January 2020.
