Spark opens 5G Co-Lab for New Zealand businesses

18 Jul 2019

New Zealand-based full-service telecoms provider Spark has officially opened its 5G Co-Lab, a purpose-built facility designed to provide New Zealand businesses with access to an interactive 5G test network while collaborating with Spark’s network team to develop ideas, products and services.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, Spark, New Zealand’s second largest mobile operator, switched on a live multi-vendor 5G trial network based on Huawei’s 5G NR solution in Auckland in November 2018. However, New Zealand’s intelligence agency, the Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB), has since rejected Spark’s request to use 5G equipment provided by the Chinese vendor, citing a national security risk.
