Sprint has switched on its 5G mobile network in central Chicago, initially covering around 700,000 people in the city. The cellco announced that its 5G service is available between IL-64 in the north to Stevenson Expressway in the south; California Avenue in the west to the periphery of Lake Michigan in the east. Sprint CEO Michel Combes said: ‘We’re proud to give customers across the heart of Chicago their first truly mobile 5G experience. We’re also excited about the tremendous opportunity for growth and innovation that Sprint 5G will bring across a wide range of industries including energy, healthcare, manufacturing, finance, insurance, transportation, hospitality and more.’
On 31 May 2019 Sprint commercially launched its 5G mobile network in parts of Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and Kansas City, with 5G smartphones available from the outset, and revealed plans to expand coverage to areas of Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Phoenix and Washington, D.C., covering approximately 2,180 square miles and 11.5 million people across nine US markets.
