Vodafone switches on 700MHz LTE base stations

9 Jul 2019

Vodafone Germany has announced it has started to utilise the 700MHz spectrum it secured in the 2015 auction, after the Federal Network Agency (FNA, known locally as the Bundesnetzagentur or BNetzA) approved the use of the frequency band for mobile communications earlier this month. The UK-owned cellco said it has already activated the first 700MHz cell sites in North Rhine-Westphalia and in Brandenburg to provide LTE services in rural areas. By the end of March 2020, a further 200 mobile base stations will be switched on to expand high speed data services in underserved areas.

Vodafone secured 2×10MHz of 700MHz frequencies in 2015, but mobile operators have not been able to use the spectrum until now due to the gradual migration of terrestrial TV to digital broadcasting services, which has now been completed.
