Trio fined over SIM registration failures

Cameroon’s mobile operators have been fined a combined XAF3.5 billion (USD5.9 million) by the Telecommunications Regulatory Board (ART) for failing to comply with SIM registration rules. Jeune Afrique reports that France-based Orange Cameroon was handed a penalty of XAF1.5 billion, while market leader MTN and Vietnamese-owned Viettel (Nexttel) were each fined XAF1.0 billion. In addition, the trio have been warned by the regulator to improve the quality of their services within one month.
