Embattled Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro has announced that the South American nation is collaborating with China on the imminent deployment of an ‘experimental’ 5G network. The statement was made at an event celebrating the 45th anniversary of Chinese-Venezuelan relations, and subsequently announced by the National Telecommunications Commission (Comision Nacional de Telecomunicaciones, Conatel).
In a separate development, Conatel noted that Chinese vendor Huawei has been selected to boost 4G coverage across Venezuela. The 4G and 5G deployments are expected to boost the fortunes of state-backed mobile operator Movilnet, which has conceded ground to privately owned rival Movistar Venezuela in recent years. The mobile market is also contested by locally owned cellco Digitel.
