Millicom International Cellular (MIC) has completed the sale of its Chadian mobile provider, Tigo Chad, to Maroc Telecom, the two parties confirmed yesterday. Commenting on the acquisition, Maroc Telecom chairman Abdeslam Ahizoune was quoted as saying: ‘The completion of this acquisition marks a further step in the international development of the Maroc Telecom Group in high potential markets, and further strengthens its strategic positioning as a major player in telecoms in Africa. Maroc Telecom will implement all its expertise to ensure long-term digital development in Chad.’
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, MIC signed a sale agreement with the Moroccan group in March this year, though the details of the transaction were not disclosed. According to the most recent official data from the Chadian sector regulator, Tigo served a total of 3.58 million subscribers at 31 December 2018, giving it a market share of just over 50%.
