NCAA begins dismantling 8,805 telecoms towers over safety concerns

20 Jun 2019

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced it has commenced the demolition of 8,805 telecoms masts and towers in different locations across the country, after companies failed to obtain the statutory Aviation Height Clearance (AHC). In a statement, the authority claimed that without the requisite AHC, the masts and towers pose a threat to air navigation safety. In April the NCAA gave Globacom and ‘other defaulters’ a 30-day ultimatum to adhere to regulations or face the ‘mass decommissioning and demolition of all their masts and towers in Nigeria’.

Companies affected by the decommissioning include Globacom (7,012 masts), United Bank of Africa (439), Guaranty Trust Bank (295), Unity Bank (217) and Sterling Bank (159).
