SOCAR takes over Millenicom

19 Jun 2019

Azerbaijan-based energy group SOCAR has completed the 100% acquisition of Turkish broadband and telephony operator Millenicom. The deal, agreed in January and receiving regulatory approval last month, was part of SOCAR’s purchase of German-backed EWE Turkey Holding (now renamed SOCAR Turkey) including four energy companies (Bursagaz, Kayserigaz, Enervis and EWE Enerji) alongside Millenicom. Quoted by the Daily Sabah, SOCAR Turkey chairman Vagif Aliyev said that the acquisition of Millenicom will create significant synergy with the 1,850km SOCAR fibre-optic network project, which is being constructed along the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP) in which SOCAR is a major partner. TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database says that Millenicom owns and operates a backbone network in Turkey built with Cisco technology, whilst it has operated voice telephony since 2004 and broadband access services since 2009, with around 216,000 retail internet subscribers at end-March 2019.
