RCS&RDS (DIGI), Romania’s fourth largest cellco by subscribers, has announced it will test live 5G technology in Bucharest’s Old Centre on 27 June in partnership with equipment supplier Ericsson, reports Hotnews.ro. In an invitation to the press, the operator revealed that new 5G internet speeds could be tested at the demo, which will be coordinated by Ericsson.
The DIGI group, which owns 93.58% of the telco, revealed in its 2018 financial report that it had concluded a deal with Ericsson in December 2017 to install 5G and NB-IoT equipment on its network in preparation for the future launch of 5G services. A full commercial rollout is not expected to take place until 2020. As previously reported by TeleGeography, Vodafone Romania staged a similar test in May that achieved mobile internet download speeds of almost 1Gbps using a 5G-compatible Huawei smartphone.
