The Faroe Islands’ first 5G network equipment test has been carried out by Faroese Telecom using technology supplied by China’s Huawei. A press release from the Chinese vendor’s Huawei Norge unit noted that the partners have been working together since 2015 on developing 4G LTE infrastructure and other developments, also highlighting that the Faroe Islands has many geographical challenges in relation to mobile coverage, with the mountain-topped islands connected via various tunnels both underground and undersea.
The first 5G test used the Huawei Mate 20X smartphone, measuring a download speed of over 1Gbps. Mads Rasmussen, CTO at Huawei Norge, said: ‘We are very pleased to bring the Faroe Islands an important step closer to all the possibilities offered by 5G. The successful test means that Faroese Telecom will soon be able to offer commercial use of 5G technologies.’
