Russia’s Mobile TeleSystems (MTS) and Ericsson are testing solutions for smart cities with 5G support in Tatarstan under their latest agreement signed at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) with President of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov. As reported by TelecomDaily, tests in hi-tech city Innopolis in the Republic will include solutions such as a ‘5G Smart City Pole’ for street lighting and other applications involving video monitoring, information points, sensors, cameras and other smart building solutions. This week MTS also signed a cooperation agreement with state-owned Russian Railways covering a RUB2 billion (USD31 million) project to expand mobile network coverage alongside nine federal railways as well as in 49 railway stations across the Federation.

Rival Russian operator Beeline and the Skolkovo Foundation have signed an agreement on the development and implementation of 5G/IoT initiatives, involving a joint demo zone and/or ‘technology cluster’ in the Skolkovo techno-park and campus near Moscow.
