Telecom Personal has teamed up with Chinese vendor Huawei to trial 5G mobile services at the DOT shopping centre in Buenos Aires. Using a single terminal – a Huawei Mate 20 X Pro – download speeds reached 700Mbps, which Personal claims is the fastest download speed demonstrated in South America to date. According to the telco, the 5G network is technically capable of supporting downlink transmission speeds of up to 1.8Gbps.
Carlos Moltini, CEO of Telecom Personal, commented: ‘Telecom has been a leader in the implementation of next generation technology, and although 5G still [needs] many aspects to be solved in terms of spectrum and definition of standards, we are taking the first steps towards the deployment of this network.’ Moltini told La Nacion that he anticipates that Argentina will see the arrival of commercial 5G services in 2021 or 2022.
