MTN completes payment of Nigeria SIM registration fine

3 Jun 2019

MTN Nigeria, the country’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, has announced it has paid the final instalment of NGN55 billion (USD151.6 million) to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) in relation to its 2015 SIM registration fine. The final instalment completes payment of the negotiated settlement between the two parties, which was lowered from an original penalty of NGN1.04 trillion to NGN330 billion. MTN was handed the fine in October 2015 for failing to disconnect around 5.1 million incompletely registered SIM cards. In addition to paying the fine, the cellco pledged to list a portion of its shares on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), a process which was initiated last month.
