Ericsson selected by SoftBank for multi-band 5G network

30 May 2019

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s (29 May) announcement that Nokia has been picked by SoftBank Corp as primary partner to deliver its 5G Radio Access Networks (RAN) in Japan, Ericsson has also been confirmed as a 5G vendor for the deployment of a multi-band 5G network. The move follows a series of successful joint proof-of-concept (PoC) trials that began back in 2015. Under the latest agreement, the Swedish vendor will supply SoftBank with RAN equipment, including products from the Ericsson Radio System portfolio, enabling it to launch 5G services using the 3.9GHz-4.0GHz and 29.1GHz-29.5GHz bands for 5G New Radio (NR). In a press release, Ericsson confirmed plans to ‘reinforce SoftBank’s existing LTE network while optimising its 5G network’, as part of the cellco’s plan to launch fifth-generation services within its current financial year.
