Deutsche Telekom rumoured to be considering Romania exit

23 May 2019

German telecoms group Deutsche Telekom (DT) is considering selling Telekom Romania, according to a report by local website G4media.ro. Sources claim the move is part of DT’s wider plan to dispose of assets resulting from its ownership of a 45% stake in Greek telco OTE Group, which is the majority shareholder of mobile operator Telekom Romania Mobile Communications and fixed line provider Telekom Romania Communications. However, discussions about exiting Romania have apparently intensified following the government’s introduction of a tax which imposed a 3% levy on telecom company revenues. Similar rumours have been reported on several occasions in recent years, forcing OTE to deny in January that it was in talks to sell its majority stake in the Romanian operator.
