Ukrainian president signs ‘2020’ 5G decree

20 May 2019

Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree on 17 May 2019 to initiate the process for rolling out 5G mobile network services in the country, setting a ‘deadline’ of 2020 for the technology’s launch. As reported by the Kyiv Post, Mr Poroshenko stated: ‘Understanding that most of the European Union countries will have 5G working by 2020, I’m signing this decree … It will clearly schedule the launch of the fifth-generation data network for 2020 in Ukraine.’ The decree, however, does not contain any details regarding conversion/freeing up of new frequencies for 5G, whilst the Ukrainian regulatory authorities are yet to draft a 5G plan for cabinet approval.
