Viettel Telecom, the country’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, has demonstrated 5G technology in cooperation with Swedish vendor Ericsson. The military-owned company, which plans to launch commercial 5G services in 2020, announced that data connection speeds ranged from 1.5Gbps to 1.7Gbps.
As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Viettel received the country’s first licence to trial 5G from the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) in January 2019. The test permit is valid for one year until 21 January 2020 and allows the firm to trial the technology in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Along with the licence, Viettel has been granted access to spectrum in the 2575MHz-2615MHz, 3700MHz-3800MHz and 26.5GHz-27.5GHz frequency bands.
