Viettel Telecom, Vietnam’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, has installed its first trial 5G base transceiver station (BTS) in the country’s capital Hanoi. Viet Nam News reports that the firm plans to deploy around 70 BTS in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City by mid-year, in order to test and evaluate 5G technology ahead of a nationwide rollout expected to take place next year.
As previously reported by CommsUpdate, Viettel received the country’s first licence to trial 5G from the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC) in January 2019. The test permit is valid for one year until 21 January 2020 and allows the military-owned company to trial the technology in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Viettel is permitted to test 5G at up to 73 locations but is not yet allowed to charge users for the services. Along with the licence, Viettel has been granted access to spectrum in the 2575MHz-2615MHz, 3700MHz-3800MHz and 26.5GHz-27.5GHz frequency bands.
