T-Mobile Austria has announced that around one million households in the capital Vienna will be able to access fixed broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps from 7 May, following the upgrade of UPC Austria’s cable network in the city. UPC Austria, which was acquired by T-Mobile in July last year, currently operates as a brand of the Deutsche Telekom-owned wireless operator but is set to be fully integrated with T-Mobile under a new unified name in May. At present, UPC’s HFC cable network supplies around one million Viennese homes with speeds of up to 300Mbps, although this is set to increase to 1Gbps after the deployment of DOCSIS 3.1 technology. Other regions served by UPC’s cable network will be upgraded gradually.
T-Mobile Austria is investing around EUR1 billion (USD1.1 billion) in its fixed and mobile networks between 2018 and 2021.
