Telefonica Deutschland commences 700MHz LTE deployment, report says

4 Apr 2019

Telefonica Deutschland has commenced its long-awaited rollout of a 700MHz LTE network, Teltarif.de reports. The website – which cites information provided by users of the Cellmapper community – notes that the 700MHz band is now being used to support 4G services in Schleswig-Holstein, the northernmost of Germany’s 16 states.

As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, in February this year rival operator Telekom Deutschland applied to the Federal Network Agency (FNA, known locally as the Bundesnetzagentur or BNetzA) for permission to use 700MHz frequencies.

TeleGeography notes that Telefonica, Telekom and Vodafone all acquired 700MHz spectrum back in 2015, but have been unable to use it due to the ongoing migration of digital broadcasting services, as well as a lack of border coordination with neighbouring countries.
