T-Mobile activates 5G base stations in Austria

27 Mar 2019

T-Mobile Austria has switched on its first 25 5G transmission stations, following the conclusion of the 5G mobile spectrum auction earlier this month. The stations are located in primarily rural regions, including Feichtendorf (Carinthia), Hochstrass (Lower Austria), Hohenau an der March (Lower Austria), Kapfenberg (Styria), Kirchbichl (Tyrol), Serfaus (Tyrol) and Wartberg im Muerztal (Styria), while urban locations include Innsbruck (Tyrol) and Villach (Carinthia). In the coming months, the firm says it will give 5G routers to the first ‘friendly customers’ to test the network, with the first 5G smartphones expected to be released by the end of the year. Additional 5G stations will be rolled out in the future; T-Mobile plans to invest EUR1 billion (USD1.1 billion) in the upgrade and expansion of its fixed and mobile networks between 2018 and 2021.
