Brazilian full-service telecoms operator Oi has staged its first 5G test in Buzios, a resort town in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The trial, which was carried out in conjunction with Chinese vendor Huawei, utilised a 100MHz block of spectrum in the 3.5GHz band. The test included a holographic call, which visitors were able to sample using special glasses which are connected to Huawei’s 5G customer premises equipment (CPE) via a 5G signal.
Oi has also upgraded its Buzios network to support LTE-A technology, taking the total number of markets covered by the platform to 26. The network aggregates spectrum in the 1800MHz, 2100MHz and 2600MHz bands. Running in parallel, fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) technology has also been extended to Buzios, meaning that 32 cities now have fibre access.
