In a press released dated 20 March 2019, Japan’s leading mobile network operator (MNO) by subscribers, NTT DOCOMO, has announced that it has made an investment in cloud gaming developer Hatch Entertainment – which ushered in the world’s first made-for-5G game streaming service in Finland in February this year – via its wholly owned subsidiary, NTT DOCOMO Ventures. The release confirmed too that DOCOMO began actively supporting Hatch’s game streaming service in Japan from 13 February. The cloud gaming specialist is engaged in streaming feature-rich content over Wi-Fi or 4G networks in the Nordic region, plus the UK and Ireland. It currently offers more than 100 games that are ready to play instantly, requiring no download, in-game paywall or costly specialised hardware. Going forward, the pair will collaborate with a growing range of game companies to maximise gaming opportunities, and leverage the technological capabilities of 5G when DOCOMO launches its commercial service sometime in 2020.
