T-Mobile set to begin 5G rollout in rural Austria

12 Mar 2019

Following the conclusion of the 3.4GHz-3.8GHz mobile spectrum auction last week, T-Mobile Austria has announced plans to begin the deployment of a 5G network in the coming weeks. The Deutsche Telekom subsidiary acquired 110MHz of spectrum covering all twelve regions for a total of EUR56.9 million (USD64 million). It plans to launch the first 25 commercial 5G mobile base stations, predominantly in rural areas, immediately after the allocation of its frequencies, which is expected at the end of this month.

‘With the auctioned frequency spectrum, T-Mobile Austria has laid the solid foundation for the fastest possible 5G set-up in Austria. With our investment of EUR57 million we give a clear commitment to the digital future of Austria,’ commented Andreas Bierwirth, CEO of T-Mobile Austria, adding: ‘Thanks to our successful bidding strategy, we were able to ensure a homogenous spectrum throughout Austria. Due to the homogeneity, we can guarantee maximum performance in the 5G network.’ Between 2018 and 2021 T-Mobile will invest a total of EUR1 billion in the development of its fixed and mobile infrastructure in Austria.
