Movistar 2G shutdown to start on 31 March; process to conclude in September 2020

7 Mar 2019

Movistar Mexico will commence the deactivation of its 2G network on 31 March 2019, the cellco has confirmed. Sources have informed El Economista that the phased process will get underway in Merida – the largest city in the Yucatan state – before being extended to other areas, concluding in Mexico City on 30 September 2020.

TeleGeography notes that Movistar’s 1900MHz GSM network went live back in 2002 and was subsequently augmented with GPRS (2003) and EDGE (2004) technology. The cellco’s plan to shut down its 2G networks was authorised by the Federal Telecommunications Institute (Instituto Federal de Telecomunicaciones, IFT) earlier this year.
