US Cellular has awarded Nokia a five-year deal to modernise its network with the provision of end-to-end 5G technology, software and services solutions. The contract builds upon the 5G trial activities that the two companies have been engaged in during the last year. As part of the agreement Nokia says that it will build out a 5G network for US Cellular using 5G capabilities compliant with 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) standards.
As previously reported by TeleGeography’s CommsUpdate, last month the US cellco enlisted Ericsson to provide it with 3GPP standards-based 5G NR hardware and software. That announcement followed the successful joint testing of various 5G use cases in rural and suburban environments in Madison, Wisconsin.
Going forward, US Cellular is committed to introducing 5G to its customers in the second half of 2019.
