CAICT predicts CNY900bn spend on 5G networks

The China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) has projected that investment in 5G network construction by Chinese firms will reach between CNY900 billion (USD134 billion) and CNY1.5 trillion in 2020-2025, China Daily cites the research group – which is affiliated with sector regulator the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) – as saying. According to the CAICT operators spent around CNY720 billion on 4G development in the 2014-2018 period, highlighting the difference in rollout cost for the new platform. On a more positive note, turnover from 5G-related business during the 2020-2025 period is expected total around CNY1.9 trillion, with the CAICT adding that the 5G sector would create around 3 million new jobs by 2025.
